fun times in san antonio

i feel super de duper tired today ... so i'm going to share some fun times i've had so far here with you to attempt to snap myself out of this.

thursday night we had our first night off campus. we went to the river walk. it was so cute! under the surface it was a little strange though because there are all these water fountains and lush greenery ... you would never know san antonio is in stage 2 of a draught if you just went there. that aside. we parked near the mexican market and walked through it to the river walk (with linda as our tour guide... i swear that woman knows every little fact about san antonio, a wealth of knowledge). we all wanted to eat together so we ended up at a bbq restaurant. paula couldn't leave texas without bbq. (yes friends i can go to high meat places too and be just fine. i think i'll do a more thorough post about that later.) we walked over the the alamo and got a group picture... oh yes we can be tourists too. by the way if you would like to see a few pictures so far here are some posted by marcelle. so you can put some faces with names...sort of.

YESTERDAY WAS MARCELLE'S 36TH BIRTHDAY!!! as we repeated constantly all day feliz cumpleaños (happy birthday) and at dinner some of the sisters sang the mexican happy birthday song. (which i think i might like a little more) there's a tradition that on your birthday a group will gather outside your window and sing that song to you! =)
We had dinner with our spiritual companions at IWM and then went to an irish pub for her birthday. it was good to get out! paula had a little culture shock when we were there because she didn't have her id on her (she's 32) and they wouldn't serve her. gosh in america we are sticklers on ids. we're all used to it, but the english not so much.

i'm very excited tomorrow we're going to mass at the cathedral and they say they have a mariachi band! then we're taking a walking tour of that area! fun times!

i have the strong desire to do an art right now. i would love to paint something (i have no paint) make a collage (i have no glue) draw with sidewalk chalk (none of that either). maybe i'll make a design out of the fallen dead leaves on the ground. sounds good to me!

    Hello Lisa, we really enjoyed talking to you last night! We found your sewing kit with no problem, the other item is a problem.

After admiring the leaves on our runs and my bike to work, we recruited my parents to take some photos of us there this weekend.   After these photos (and tackling some IT issues for my parents) we went to a birthday gathering at the jazz festival on Cherokee Street.  I liked it more than I thought I would. Concerts = ♡

Last week was an exceptional concert week for me.  I was lucky enough to catch San Fermin, The Mowgli's, & American Authors.  In one week! My sister, Karen, and I found out San Fermin would be in Chicago at LouFest when we went through the artist signing line.  (Correction: Karen participated in the artist signing line, while I hid behind her shoulder and Ellis, the composer/writer, reached out to me to introduce himself.  This band is full of quality people.  Just sayin'.  I get awkward around bands.)   So we followed through.  Found their show at the Metro (which could not be more convenient for us) and met up with Rubina, my friend, to enjoy their show.  So good.  We were not disappointed.  I was only minutely disappointed because for some reason I assumed they were headlining so when they didn't come out for an encore I was confused.  But then I realized they were the middle act and it made sense. ...

Kitchen Safety

We moved!  We're in our new place and we just got wifi.  Wahoo! I definitely broke in the kitchen quickly.  I was making a panini type sandwich for a potluck get together so I preheated the oven.  The next thing I knew the fire alarm was going off.  Let me tell you they did not skimp on a very loud fire alarm.  Ahhhhhhhh I opened the oven, which I know you're not supposed to do.  In the moment, I think I needed to see what I was dealing with.  There were definite flames.  Ahhhhhhhh So I called Mike while trying to google what to do.  He was super calm the entire call while I freaked out (it probably helped that he couldn't see the smoke billowing out of the oven).   He said to throw baking soda on it.  I did.  It seemed to fizzle but came back. I searched the apartment for a fire extinguisher (maybe I should have looked for one before this moment). This is while I kept trying to silence the fire ...
