So México does really like soccer... it's not a myth.
Before the World Cup started they played Italy & the game was on during lunchtime at work so Karen turned it on and México scored while we were watching and to hear those kids scream goooooooooooooooooo. It was so much better than I ever could have imagined.
But this was just a preview for the start of the World Cup.
México played South Africa Friday, but Israel, a kid in my class, started wearing his jersey to school Monday. He couldn't just wear his jersey because he has to wear his uniform so he wore it under his uniform. It gets pretty warm here during the days so I asked him why he wore so many layers and he just started chanting "México México México!" I just had to laugh.
Then Friday as I waited outside the door for someone to come open it I could just hear all the kids chanting "México México México México!" I started getting excited too. So I came in to find everyone crammed in the lunchroom (where the TV is) with the TV on the game and all the kids all dressed in their México gear with flags and face paint. It was so adorable.
Kids being kids and only really having an interest in a game when they're playing they didn't really want to watch the TV. So I ended up with 4ish children all crawling on my lap all wanting my lap for themselves... it's a good thing I wasn't very interested in the game. I even ended up getting bit.
We only watched about 40 minutes of the game before going to the classrooms and attempting to do some work. The work for Friday consisted of coloring flags and gluing stuff on México while I frantically traced soccer balls for them to glue on their papers. Then we transformed the room into a soccer goal and had the kids take turns kicking a ball and if anyone scored... goooooooooooooool!
And I know this is just a preview... the next game is Thursday.
