Day 5, Thursday: Snorkeling, Resort
Karen & Mom day
Karen likes to Snorkel and we were going to make that happen on her day. We headed to a nearby town, Puerto Morelos, to find a place to snorkel.
Mom decided to stay at the resort this day, she's not a big swimmer so it made sense.
We took a colectivo from the resort to Puerto Morelos and then walked to the beach. Karen decided it was too far of a walk and said, "Why am I walking on my day off?" That's what her days became... her day off. (We took a colectivo back so we only walked one way.)
Puerto Morelos retains its quiet, small-town feel and has shallow Caribbean waters on the coral reef only 1,800 feet offshore. We got there and found a snorkeling place off the beaten path almost immediately.
They asked us to wait 20 minutes and they would take the two of us out. We sat in the Zócalo and had a very special treat. The kindergartners at the nearby school were having their spring walk around the Zócalo so we got to watch their parade. Really made me think of this =)
Then the boat driver came over to see if we were ready. On the way they got another couple to come with us. They were from Pennsylvania and very sweet. The tour consisted of two diving spots 45 minutes each. As soon as the two workers on the boat realized I spoke spanish they spoke to me in spanish and had me translate.
As we pulled up to the site of our dive we saw about 5 boats, all with 15ish people. And there we were with 4!
We had a lovely time. It was the most beautiful area of fish and coral I've seen. I loved watching the schools of fish as they all moved as one and adjusted to the moving water.
After snorkeling we walked around the town a bit and went to the Colectivo de Artesanos de Puerto Morelos (Puerto Morelos Artists' Cooperative). I bought a bowl that I'm in love with and loved that I was able to purchase it from the man who made it as he explained there's only one of it's kind, etc.
We headed back to the resort, had lunch in the room and headed to the pool for the rest of the day.
Side note: I love that my name is pronounced the exact same in Spanish!
The disorganization of the hotel reared it's head again this night with Mexican night at one of the restaurants. We didn't know you needed reservations. Which you did. The book mentions nothing about reservations. My suggestion: ask lots of questions!
We went back to our room and Karen made us delicious pasta and we were happy.

*I used two library books as references on the trip so we knew what we were looking at:
Lonely Planet's Cancún, Cozumel & the Yucatán 2008
Fodor's Cancún and the Riviera Maya 2012
I also found the reviews on Trip Advisor to be very helpful.
