oh biking the last 48 hours

i really think i could only write about stupid silly things i do and fill up an entire blog.  i mean i do learn something after each thing....

but that would probably make me look... ummmm... bad.  but i will share the last 48 hours of biking.  all full of fun stories.

it all started yesterday with a beautiful sunny 70º morning.  i slipped on a summer dress and got on my way to work.  knowing that the weather was supposed to change during the day, but not even caring because i wanted some sun rays in my life so desperately.
i get to my underpass that i take everyday and i see it's flooded.  WHAT is going on!  'well, i ride through here everyday and never lose my balance and fall.  i can do that again, no problem.'  i go in anyway and of course... lose my balance.  my feet and shoes are soaked.  at least i have a wonderful sun shiny ride to dry off before work.
then... the weather did in fact change during the day.  unlike the previous two days where the weather people lied were incorrect.
i told myself if when i left the wind was coming strong at me meaning it would be blowing against me the entire way home, i would put my bike on the bus and splurge on a bus ride home.  i always judge the strength of the wind by the flags at the adler.  (you would think I would judge by the way it felt?  nope)  i got outside and the flags were already down.  well shoot.  this was my thought process:  'it's not as bad as i imagined in my head.  maybe if i put my gloves that i have in my bag on (yes with my summer dress) i can do it.'
so that i did.
it wasn't necessarily an enjoyable ride, but i made it.  and i was proud.  (even though i've ridden in worse before)

today's ride started out great!  after so many rides battling the wind, i had the wind at MY back this morning.  rather than looking at all the people going the opposite direction with jealously.  i was cruising along until i came to the part of the path that curves out to the lake....
oh man.
the waves were crashing up on the path and creating dramatic, moving puddles.  'if only i can time this just perfectly...'
i was almost through when...
huge HUGE wave crashed onto the path.  i totally saw it coming too and there was nothing i could do.  i was up against the wall.
it soaked me from my waist down... and i was wearing socks.  ugh.
upon arriving at work i immediately went to the hand dryers and tried to dry.  no real luck though.  looks like i'm in for a day of discomfort.
unfortunately, i'm not done yet.
then i'm on one of my last stretches when bamb there's some sort-of walk or something with people everywhere completely blocking ALL the sidewalks.  at this point i was around 2 other bikers and we very slowly weaved around the people until finally riding on the grass and then the sidewalk the walkers didn't know about for freedom.
this was made all the more challenging because i think i've mentioned before i have a pretty old bike and i'm not sure if i've mentioned before that my brakes aren't wonderful.  so with wet wheels my brakes were basically not functioning.  oh fun.
but i'm still considering biking home.  i mean what do i have to lose then?  i have dry clothes at home.

at least it wasn't raining.

i start to wonder when this curse will end?
but i won't let it stop me.

museum field trip

i've been doing really well on my field trip resolution . yesterday i hit up another one:  the chicago history museum .  it turns out it was a free day there, even though i was going to get in free anyway.  that means it was busy! which is fine, i still got to take a gander around.   I've never been to the history museum before so that in itself was exciting. probably my favorite part was when they talked about the world's fair in chicago (i can't remember the exact name).  the buildings were so much grander than i imagined them in my mind while i read, devil in the white city a couple months ago.  it was fun to see what it was really like.  and wow! there was also an awesome exhibit about workers rights and such. so it was a fun little excursion.

Kitchen Safety

We moved!  We're in our new place and we just got wifi.  Wahoo! I definitely broke in the kitchen quickly.  I was making a panini type sandwich for a potluck get together so I preheated the oven.  The next thing I knew the fire alarm was going off.  Let me tell you they did not skimp on a very loud fire alarm.  Ahhhhhhhh I opened the oven, which I know you're not supposed to do.  In the moment, I think I needed to see what I was dealing with.  There were definite flames.  Ahhhhhhhh So I called Mike while trying to google what to do.  He was super calm the entire call while I freaked out (it probably helped that he couldn't see the smoke billowing out of the oven).   He said to throw baking soda on it.  I did.  It seemed to fizzle but came back. I searched the apartment for a fire extinguisher (maybe I should have looked for one before this moment). This is while I kept trying to silence the fire ...

thanksgiving time

( via ) Yes, I like Santa.  But why is everyone so anxious to start with Christmas?  Why can't we appreciate Thanksgiving first? don't get me wrong, i'm excited to watch Love Actually again (when it's in-season.  i actually watch it all year long). everyone kept talking about christmas being everywhere this month, but i really only encountered it when i walked around the mall with Greta (my sister-in-law) on Monday.  it was all over the mall.  it could have been december. look what Nordstrom is doing i'm actually really excited for thanksgiving this year... (details to follow) but as far as today goes... I have to share this with you because I think it's funny ( via ) actually... at 11:11 I was running around looking for a book called The Moon Seems to Change
