happy valentine's day

i can definitely go back and forth on this one, but i think i like valentine's day.

awwww man! rent gets me every time. i'm not a person to splurge much, except for the flight that you'll read about in a minute, but that's for my family. anyway back to the splurges. i would totally splurge on a ticket to rent. i just love that show. it might be my fav live performance. if not my fav, very very close to the top. the movie just doesn't do it justice folks. oh but live.... i think i remember crying during this part the first time i saw it live. when karen & i took an impromptu trip to the fox and we were so happy with ourselves when we said "best available" seats (mom & dad treated...and we rehearsed what to say with dad before going). good memories.

sorry back to valentine's day...

this year the part that pulled me most towards the positive end was in mass they did a blessing of all married couples and had them stand up and hold hands and look at each other. i was watching this one older couple (70ish) looking deeply into each others eyes with like a 'i'm totally in love with you' smile, like they just got married yesterday. it made me melt a little bit just watching...i was definitely smiling just watching the two of them do a little renewal of vows or whatever.
precious.

i also love watching people walking to their sweeties with gifts in tow. you can just tell by their face. it's like nervous excitement anticipation. it's adorable. i really don't think all the gifts and glam are necessary, but i love their expressions none the less.

i will be sad to see the valentine's day decorations that have been up for over a month at the Roosevelt stop go away. they always made me laugh and cheered me up a little.

i celebrated by watching the notebook over the weekend, catching up with my longest friend (a pretty intense and wonderful catch-up session), and getting a special valentine's day concoction at my fav place coffee and tea exchange. i hope you celebrate in a special way too!

i think i need some family love so i'm planning a trip home to the fam. i just got the tickets last night. i've been debating awhile about going home the last weekend of feb. because karen's hosting a bachelorette party for one of her high school friends. but. i get this saturday off since i'm working today so i'll have more time this weekend (3-day weekend). and a lot is happening with my grandmas. my 96 year old grandma is not doing well. (that may be an understatement actually). then this week my other grandma went into the hospital with a viral infection. man oh man. last week was the week of a sense of dread if my phone rang or checking email. i literally got an email with the subject "grandma c." which was bad and "grandma rottler" later in the week. also bad.
yes, i think i need some family love.

i'm off to work. today is the first day of my program park voyagers. i'm so excited to see how it goes. even if it does involve having a strange schedule for the next month and a half.

museum field trip

i've been doing really well on my field trip resolution . yesterday i hit up another one:  the chicago history museum .  it turns out it was a free day there, even though i was going to get in free anyway.  that means it was busy! which is fine, i still got to take a gander around.   I've never been to the history museum before so that in itself was exciting. probably my favorite part was when they talked about the world's fair in chicago (i can't remember the exact name).  the buildings were so much grander than i imagined them in my mind while i read, devil in the white city a couple months ago.  it was fun to see what it was really like.  and wow! there was also an awesome exhibit about workers rights and such. so it was a fun little excursion.

Kitchen Safety

We moved!  We're in our new place and we just got wifi.  Wahoo! I definitely broke in the kitchen quickly.  I was making a panini type sandwich for a potluck get together so I preheated the oven.  The next thing I knew the fire alarm was going off.  Let me tell you they did not skimp on a very loud fire alarm.  Ahhhhhhhh I opened the oven, which I know you're not supposed to do.  In the moment, I think I needed to see what I was dealing with.  There were definite flames.  Ahhhhhhhh So I called Mike while trying to google what to do.  He was super calm the entire call while I freaked out (it probably helped that he couldn't see the smoke billowing out of the oven).   He said to throw baking soda on it.  I did.  It seemed to fizzle but came back. I searched the apartment for a fire extinguisher (maybe I should have looked for one before this moment). This is while I kept trying to silence the fire ...

thanksgiving time

( via ) Yes, I like Santa.  But why is everyone so anxious to start with Christmas?  Why can't we appreciate Thanksgiving first? don't get me wrong, i'm excited to watch Love Actually again (when it's in-season.  i actually watch it all year long). everyone kept talking about christmas being everywhere this month, but i really only encountered it when i walked around the mall with Greta (my sister-in-law) on Monday.  it was all over the mall.  it could have been december. look what Nordstrom is doing i'm actually really excited for thanksgiving this year... (details to follow) but as far as today goes... I have to share this with you because I think it's funny ( via ) actually... at 11:11 I was running around looking for a book called The Moon Seems to Change
