mission: soup

so one of my new year's resolutions, which I recently added is cooking more. I've been doing a pretty good job if I say so myself. Today is another adventure for hot and sour soup. so the colder temps came just at the right time for soup. but not so perfect for my grocery store trek.

there were some things in this soup i had never heard of, which forced me to spend more time than i wanted searching the aisles of jewel and whole foods. i started at jewel because i figured if i could get it cheaper i absolutely would. like white vinegar. jewel please. i spent more time than i'd like to admit going up and down (actually just down...verrrrrry slowly) the international food aisle. at this point looking for siracha sauce. no luck. so i headed out with my 4 items.

then i started getting super excited for whole foods. whole foods is definitely a special treat for me. i mean trader joe's will always have my heart, but i really do love whole foods. i start by tackling the veggies.
-spring onions. i looked and looked and looked. i probably covered the veggie department 3 times. and sadly this is not an exaggeration. then i finally googled it because i figured if i at least knew what they looked like that would be helpful. in case you ever cook anything that calls for spring onions, they have several names: scallion, salad onion, onion sticks, green shallots, green onion. thank you google that was extremely helpful and then i found my "spring onions"
-bean sprouts. i wanted alfalfa. i found where those belong, but they were out. ugh. so i submitted to buying broccoli sprouts. boo, but i really didn't have another option. they were $2 more and i threw them in my basket with disgust. I should mention i had the most awesome check out girl and i bought a luna bar and she found me a coupon in their little coupon book to save me some money and it almost made up for the extra $2 i was forced to spend on sprouts.

i splurged a little getting napalitos. which i love. they are cut up cactus. mmmm. can't wait to have them with some eggs someday soon. i also got some tofu while it was on sale. it was actually a pretty great deal.

so i was enjoying myself during this as much as i could with siracha sauce still on my mind. yipee! it was much easier to find at whole foods. it was spelt a little different sriracha sauce or something like that, but at that point, i could care less.

i spent some time searching the salad bar for bean sprouts, but there were none. so i bought my broccoli sprouts.

mmmm....and it's delicious!

museum field trip

i've been doing really well on my field trip resolution . yesterday i hit up another one:  the chicago history museum .  it turns out it was a free day there, even though i was going to get in free anyway.  that means it was busy! which is fine, i still got to take a gander around.   I've never been to the history museum before so that in itself was exciting. probably my favorite part was when they talked about the world's fair in chicago (i can't remember the exact name).  the buildings were so much grander than i imagined them in my mind while i read, devil in the white city a couple months ago.  it was fun to see what it was really like.  and wow! there was also an awesome exhibit about workers rights and such. so it was a fun little excursion.

Kitchen Safety

We moved!  We're in our new place and we just got wifi.  Wahoo! I definitely broke in the kitchen quickly.  I was making a panini type sandwich for a potluck get together so I preheated the oven.  The next thing I knew the fire alarm was going off.  Let me tell you they did not skimp on a very loud fire alarm.  Ahhhhhhhh I opened the oven, which I know you're not supposed to do.  In the moment, I think I needed to see what I was dealing with.  There were definite flames.  Ahhhhhhhh So I called Mike while trying to google what to do.  He was super calm the entire call while I freaked out (it probably helped that he couldn't see the smoke billowing out of the oven).   He said to throw baking soda on it.  I did.  It seemed to fizzle but came back. I searched the apartment for a fire extinguisher (maybe I should have looked for one before this moment). This is while I kept trying to silence the fire ...

( via ) Yes, I like Santa.  But why is everyone so anxious to start with Christmas?  Why can't we appreciate Thanksgiving first? don't get me wrong, i'm excited to watch Love Actually again (when it's in-season.  i actually watch it all year long). everyone kept talking about christmas being everywhere this month, but i really only encountered it when i walked around the mall with Greta (my sister-in-law) on Monday.  it was all over the mall.  it could have been december. look what Nordstrom is doing i'm actually really excited for thanksgiving this year... (details to follow) but as far as today goes... I have to share this with you because I think it's funny ( via ) actually... at 11:11 I was running around looking for a book called The Moon Seems to Change
